Board > Beginners Question

My son is 12 and very interested in drawing and animation. I want to buy him software so he can begin to improve his skills. What software would your artists recommend he use? Photoshop keeps coming up in my research but I don't know if that's the right answer.

Thanks. - claytonlmorgan@gmail.com

Photoshop is the primary tool of trade for Digital artists in the fields of drawing, painting, illustration and graphic design.

He will "need" a wacom digital tablet with pressure sensitivity. I suggest the bamboo by wacom. Without the wacom tablet, he will be missing alot of the features that the program offers artists.

Another option is getting him a wacom and letting him use free painting programs and trials. Photoshop, Corel Painter, Artrage all offer trials. Painttool SAI and GIMP are free but not industry standard.

For 2d animation, i believe adobe offers some functional to aid there, but im not too familar with 2d animation on the computer.
For 3d animation, he'll have to get familiar with 3D MAX, MAYA, or programs made specifically for 3d animation, which is a topic all in itself.

I suggest going cheap, Getting him a bamboo wacom, and look online for OEM versions of photoshop or painter. I know from experience the oem version of painter 10 was $80 a year ago. OEM, just means you get the disc with the serial key, No manuals or box. All the information for the programs are online anyways so save some money.

Hope that helps!
