Delacor Draco

A conceptual illustration created for Advanced Photoshop magazine Issue 063. The editor Julie asked for a simple creative creature workshop involving a dragon flying toward the viewer. The only two restrictions were the POV and they didn't want a red dragon. Senior staff writer Adam art directed the remaining work. It was suggested that I just keep the background simple because of the tight deadline.

I didn't want to go with the typical dragon, so I had suggested the idea of a butterfly and parrot colored dragon with similar elements tied into the design and patterns. This is a 4 page workshop that covered some simple custom brush creation and creature design ideation, the issue is out now.

Wonderful design, Mike. It evokes the character of both parrots and butterflies very well. It also reminds me a bit of a Protoceratops.
My favorite aspect of this design is the short tail. It's an excellent contrast with all the long-tailed dragons that you see.

Thanks Cory; Yea, when I was fleshing out some quick thumbnails my focus was to stay away from the typical long horns, webbed ears, skin flapped wings separated by digits, long tail etc.. So I wanted the tail on this guy to match portions of design on the head. They are a bit like soft flat round flaps of skin/feathers. Edit: posted 2 thumbnail pages of the preliminary sketches.

I'm sorry Mike, but - to my eyes - those drawings SO outshine the final painting... Thanks for posting those! Fucking fantastic.

Hey William,
Yea, I myself am usually more attracted to sketches and doodles showing an artists thoughts and ideas over a finished painting. In general, though I'll produce Illustrations, I always consider myself more of a sketch/concept artist. They are really rough, but if you want to see them a little larger they are on my blog:http://mikecorriero.blogspot.com/

Thanx, Mike! I just think you haven't yet fleshed out your painterly bliss, but that if you want it you'll find it and you'll get your finished pics to a place that the same superb as your drawings. You don't HAVE to, of course, but you can. Srsly. Again -- great drawings -- I always at least Like your stuff, and very often just Love it. You are to creatures as Sammy is to robots, imho. Cheers.

William, I think it's just going to take more time for me to finally get to that point. I don't really paint quite as much as I like, I end up sketching and doodling a thousand times more in my sketchbooks. That's a nice compliment, I love Sammy's ID work. He's kind of the guy that got me started on thumbnailing a lot more than I used to, and the importance of thumbnails.

Davi - thanks man

One understands that life is not very cheap, nevertheless we require cash for different things and not every one gets big sums money. Therefore to get fast loan or small business loan would be a right way out.
