the rendering is incredible. Well done
I agree, the rendering is wonderful. You've got some serious painting skills. I also really love the unique creature design. As if the thing needs a skull on it's face to appear scary, HA I love that!
i dig it man, love both the rendering and the design :)
Gorgeous! I love the whimsical but creepy critter, and the atmospheric background is wonderfully done.
I just happen to have pulled out "EXPEDITION" a coupluv days ago to study from, so this guy is a welcome sight! I don't like the skull painting, the composition feels a bit chopped, and the guy doesn't actually improve the image imo... But, the design of those wings and head -- the distribution and treatment of the feathers -- just friggin marvelous! I am flat-out entranced by that wing and head. Nice rocks and fogginess, too. :)
Damn excellent rendering... looks all most 3d'ish. I'm with William on the feedback because if you eliminated those distractions the piece overall will feel more solid. Great work never the less...

HA! I didn't even notice the skull till I read through everyone else's comments.
Personally, I don't like the skull... but I like the idea that it has some sort of "tattoo" or "branding".
I would suggest something less obvious... maybe just a really cool Mayan/tribal/mystical symbol of some sort.
Maybe even a geometric occult looking symbol.
I like the man being included... it gives me insight into this creature's temperament.
Perhaps he is responsible for the "tattoo" on the creature's face?
Maybe it's a spell that keeps the creature from sucking his brains out?
Rock solid painting man. I'll definitely be studying this one for a while. (Kind of like I do with the rest of your work!)
That skin and those feathers, DAMN.
All I can say.
Thanks guys for all the comments. Some really interesting feedback too, which is great. I still haven't caught up with all the great art on this site - hope to do that very soon.
Amazing work. Very Barlowe-esque. I agree that the "guy" does tell alot about the creature. His expression is a bit blank but the whole image still works very very well.
