I'd like to hear Jerad's answer, but from what I've seen of his designs and the trailer. It seems they didn't exactly do justice to the concept art, or pay close enough attention. I never watched DBZ but I had seen clips of shows here and there and I am of course aware of the series. I just think they could have done so much more with it.. Jerad's concepts here show the direction it should have taken. It seems that studios like to re-hash existing franchises, re-makes, sequels and could care less if the films really come out to the expectations of its viewers.
Yep they killed it! It was barely featured in the movie and reworked in the suite so that the design would be symmetrical to save money. Asymmetry gets expensive. Oddly enough they are featured much more in the video game.
Jerad, That kinda pisses me off that, that happens..though concerning budgets etc.. I understand why. Still, it sucks when a great design suffers due to budgets, bad direction etc..
These designs and the ones below this post are so damn awesome, if they were portrayed in a detailed CG and or mix of CG and prosthetic/animatronic done rather well they would look Fuc*in cool. I'd like to see how they look in the game. I hate when they slaughter a good design.
I didn't watch DB movie as well, I did a few searches in internet to see how they came up with the suits... man have to agree that the result doesn't pay your awesome work on the concept. I understand the budget issue but sadly have to agree with Mike... with your artwork the result should be top quality :( Can I model it again in 3d please? I promise with all its asymmetrical goodness ahahah:D Anyway great works, truly inspiring!
And yeah that movie looked like a train wreck. The DragonBall manga was one of those manga/anime that got me into anime and manga way back in high school. I love Toriyama's designs and art but I really wish they just made a pixar-esque CG movie, to stay faithful to the original style. Ah well just another childhood memory tarnished by hollywood!
But again the art stands on it's own as very cool!
