Hi Everybody!
Laurel Austin --
Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 4:35 AM I'm Laurel, senior concept artist at Splash Damage, helping making games in London. Our latest project is Brink, a first person shooter set on a craaaazy floating city. I was responsible for character and weapon design, plus a fair number of environments, tech and vehicles. Bits of everything, really :)
What I do for work isn't too creature focused, but in spare time I sculpt and creatures are always a favourite subject for that. I'm sculpting just about all the time and I should post some new stuff as I finish it, but here are some more-or-less recent works! A mix of regular Super Sculpey and Super Sculpey Firm is what I tend to mostly use.

a turnaround for allosaurus can be found here!

Cheers!

great sculpts! that dino is sliiiick!
Hi Laurel welcome to the site it's good to see you on here. I was only on your site a few days ago checking out your fantastic work after seeing a video for the Brink custom character creator. I think that the work you guys have been doing at Splash Damage looks great! Those characters are awesome, I love the elongated faces, nice touch!
Your sculpts are so good! Can I see a bit of a Simon Lee{spider zero} influence in there? The Hyena creature is really awesome, my personal favourite out of this selection. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more of your work.
excellent work, I love your style, very slick and agressive..
very good past time you have here!
keep on posting
Thanks guys!
Ryan: I'm glad you like the look of Brink! I'm pretty proud of the work I've done for that game -- the characters were definitely a blast and the character team is insanely good! Which is nice that they can make my work look so nice :)
All the stuff on my website (except sculptures) is mostly ancient. Embarrassment hasn't quite got me motivated enough to take half that stuff down, but hopefully when the game is released I'll be able to have a whole lot of new things to put up! If you'd like to have a look, my art director did a dev blog post over at Bethesda's blog, and it has some of the actual character concepts in it -- http://bethblog.com/index.php/2009/10/08/brink-developer-diary-2-olivier-leonardi/ , plus he writes about general interesting stuff.
And yeah, Simon Lee's a big inspiration! I don't know if it's possible to his work and not get all googly over it.
Wow! Very impressive stuff. I don't know too many concept artists who do concepts AND sculpt. Really beautiful sculpts, too :]
Gorgeous work! :D
Amazing work Laurel. Love the strength that comes through in all of your sculpts. jaw-dropingly inspiring work.
Incredible body of work!!!Absolutely love your style!! Thanks for sharing!
The dino turnaround link leads to a 404.
Aside from that, I'm amazed. Incredible work! Looks like you have a lot of fun creating these.
*smacks head* noob mistake -- slippery little underscores. that link should work now.
Cheers, peoples!
Waow, the torso and legs on the centaur are painfully great... Your tight bundling of bone, muscle, and sinew under taut skin -- oof -- it's beautiful, just beautiful. [*shakes head*]
impressive work ! That allosaurus is gorgeous
Wow, I don't know if I've ever seen clay look so good. The centaur guy on the ground is fan-friggin-tastic. (Of course, so are the rest but that one just screams at me to do better in everything I do in life). Great to have you here Laurel! Truly inspiring eye candy.
Excellent work! These are all great, but I actually like the skull-faced orc guy at the top the best. I have a real soft spot for primitive, tribal designs, especially ones that feature skulls. Is the skull a mask, or is he just a supernatural guy with a skull for a head?
I really can't say anything that hasn't already been said.
It's all just so good, so clean.
Love to see a master's work.
You Allosaurus is beautiful! I wish we'd see something that ferocious looking in a game sometime, with movement equally ferocious.
your work is amazing! great sculpts, love the style.
will you be selling any of these?
what clay did you use to do these?
