Thrung's Pets - Dark Heresy

The first of my work on the Warhammer 40K RPGs is finally out. These were a pair of original hyena alligator mutant monster pets I got to design for the new Dark Heresy supplement, The Black Sepulchre. It was really fun to design something new for the 40K universe and so far has been my one and only opportunity to do so.

This was a fun one to work on :) RAWR!

Those heads are so nicely designed and rendered -- You've really managed to communicate the sort of massive toughness and strength that one gets with a crocodile, keeping the basic forms simple and believable and respecting how the use of subtle detail, pattern, and thoughtful transitions can create a very distinctive and compelling look.

The dog-tag is a bit hokey, but thas ok. ...And I'm not sure what that maple-leaf shape on the left is (another dog-tag?), but I don't think it's doing any harm and I might actually miss it if it disappeared. :)

The sense of interaction between the two creatures is strong. You've also done a very good job of creating a tightly rectangular composition that feels natural and in harmony with the canvas edge... respectful of the negative space.

Something else that I like about this creature is that although the inspirations of crocodile and hyena are apparent, they don't present in a slapped-together, chimera-like, way.

...And what a beautiful job on that tail. Not clear to me how the creature's spine would align with its orientation, but in a general way it sure looks good. Front limbs of the creature on the right are very nicely done, too.

I've actually found myself far more drawn into these guys than I initially expected. Hopefully they'll let you do some more original designs now. :D
