Okotto, Nago, Beautiful and Strong

A few months ago I have the absolute pleasure for creating work for a Miyazaki Tribute show at SketchPad Gallery in San Francisco. I decided I'd illustrate Nago from Princess Mononoke in his peaceful form, before he lost himself. I produced two original pieces in the creation of this illustration; a pencil and a painting.

The pencils I use tend to be on the softer side and don't do well with lots of painting over top, especially on a painting this detailed. So instead, once the pencil is finished, I scan it in and reprint it as a giclee print on hot press watercolor paper. This way, I can preserve my pencil work underneath the gouache.

I tend to layer quite a bit with gouache, staining and building up values slowly. Overall, this piece took about 3-4 days to complete. Here's the final image:

The final image measures 9x12 and is gouache on hot press watercolor paper. Thanks so much for looking!

Dungeons & Dragons

Hey everyone! Thought I'd share some Dungeons & Dragons work from 2013. These illustrations were created for the 5th Edition Monster Manual. Each monster was illustrated using pencil, watercolor and photoshop.

Thanks for looking! :)

I’ve recently had the pleasure of working with the folks over at Monte Cook Games on their game, Numenera. Numenera is a science fantasy roleplaying game set in the far distant future. I’m not able to show all that I’ve done yet but I have permission to post this piece. I’ve been working on original creatures for the game, which has been just awesome. This large fellow is a creature I designed for the brackish waters of The Ninth World. Anyway, I’m excited to keep working on Numenera and can’t wait to show more work from the project. The core book is up for pre-order on their website and will be released in August.

More Sketchy Creatures

Here are a few more free time sketchy creatures. I try and do one during my lunch break or in the morning before I start work.

Thanks for looking! :)

Conures, Reptilian Folk and Doodlies!

Hey everyone! I'm always so inspired by all of the work on here! I've been keeping busy with getting ready for Spectrum Art Live this month as well as new projects. Here are a few things I've made recently:

I like to doodle when I drink my tea. This is just a way to warm up in the morning and to have fun doodling out fun ideas without any pressure:

If you'd like to see a few more pages you can do so on my blog:

What's fun about doodlies, is you can develop them further later! So I chose one from another page and took it to finish:

Of course, drawing real animals is always fun! Here's a sun conure:

And last but not least, here's a reptilian bloke for fun:

More updates coming soon for The Red Valley and some new projects in the pipeline! :D
